5 Ways to Protect Your Car's Interior From the Sun

We all know that outdoor hazards can damage the exterior of a vehicle, but what many people forget is that these hazards – namely the sun – can damage the interior as well. These are some of the easiest ways to protect your car’s interior from the sun.

1.       Put Up Windshield Sun Shades

Placing sun shades in your front and back windshields when you park your car is one of the easiest ways to protect its interior. Car interiors are notoriously quick to heat up when sitting outside. In fact, it only takes 30 minutes for the inside of a car to reach 104 degrees, even on a mild 70-degree day.
Windshield sun shades block direct sunlight from entering your vehicle, limiting the amount of heat your seats, dashboard and steering wheel can absorb. Most shades are available in universal small, medium or large sizes. However, you may be able to grab some that were designed specifically for your vehicle to ensure complete protection.

2.       Install Dash and Rear Deck Covers

Your dashboard and rear deck are the firstthings to fall victim to sun exposure, so it’s especially important to protect them. Dark-colored dashes absorb even more light than their lighter-colored counterparts, leading to premature cracking.

Even when temperatures aren’t high, the sun can fade and crack dash tops. Dash and rear deck covers will keep these areas cool and protected.

3.       Insert Protective Floor Mats

Car floors often go overlooked as they’re the place where crumbs collect and water bottles disappear. However, if you leave them dirty, heat can bake odors into the floor permanently.

If your carpet has seen its fair share of spills, it could be a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Not to mention, the dirt, snow, sand and dust tracked in from your shoes can damage your floors very quickly and become embedded in the fibers of your car floor.

All-weather mats are specially designed to limit the damage caused by simply getting in and out of the car. These mats will stay in place to collect anything that’s thrown at them, meaning liquids won’t bake into your vehicle’s fabric.

4.       Invest in Seat Protectants

Leather or leatherette seats are infamous for scorching the backs of people’s legs. As your vehicle sits in the sun, theseats absorb the UV rays, which can cause damage over time. Applying leather cleaner and conditioner is an excellent way to protect your seats, as the chemicals will help keep the leather supple even in the heat.

Seat covers are also recommended for particularly hot days. With seat covers, your seats are protected from the sun’s UV rays and the backs of your legs will be spared the sting of hot leather. Seat covers are available in a variety of styles, colors and fits.

5.       Park in the Shade

Perhaps the simplest way to protect your interiors from the sun is by parking in covered or shaded areas. By avoiding direct sunlight, your seats and steering wheel won’t absorb as much heat and your dash will be protected from drying and cracking.

You could also crack open the windows – if it is safe to do so – tohelp lower the interior temperature and equalize the air pressure.

Today most car buyers take crumple zones, safety belts, airbags and anti-lock brakes for granted, but overall safety features of a car are still a priority for most people.
