This year, Nissan is coming back strong with the
new-and-improved sixth-generation Altima. A longtime staple in Nissan’s lineup,
the new Altima has undergone significant improvements that make the model a
worthy option for sedan fans or those thinking of jumping ship for a crossover.
Here are just a few of the new features you can expect.
Engine Reboot
Nissan has taken great care to redesign their engine for
better fuel efficiency without compromising on power. All trims come standard
with a reimagined 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that differs
significantly from the engine in previous Altimas. The new engine produces 188
hp and 180 lb-ft of torque – both decent
improvements from the last engine.
Auto enthusiasts also have a second engine to choose from in
higher trim levels. Nissan is touting the 2.0-liter Variable Compression Turbo
engine (VC-Turbo) as the first of its kind. This engine replaces the outgoing
3.5-liter four-cylinder V6 engine, but it offers some notable advantages, like
better torque when using premium gas, smaller size and reduced emissions.
All-Wheel Drive
Perhaps the most notable change from last year is that
Nissan will now be offering an Intelligent
All-Wheel Drive option on every Altima with a 2.5-liter engine, although
front-wheel drive is still the default. Competitors Honda
and Toyota don’t offer all-wheel drive in any of their sedans. This makes
the 2019 Nissan Altima the perfect family car for those living in rainy or
snowy regions of the U.S.
Drivers who choose all-wheel drive can adjust how engine power
is divided between the front and back of the vehicle. Up to 50 percent of the
torque can be used in the rear wheels.
Technology
The new Altima’s technological capabilities are on par with
those of other sedans on the market. Entertainment enthusiasts will be happy to
know that every trim has an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
compatibility and Sirius XM radio.
Drivers can also give voice commands with Siri Eyes Free and
Google Assistant and control their doors and engine with Apple Watch and
Android Wear. Keyless entry and push-button start, which are practically
mandatory in newer cars, are available in the base trim.
Safety Features
Much like other sedans in its class, the 2019 Altima has incorporated
semiautonomous features to make driving safer. All trims come standard with
Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking to help prevent
avoidable accidents.
The upper trims also come with additional safety features,
such as:
ProPILOT Assist
This Level
2 Driver Assistance technology keeps your car in the middle of the lane,
maintains gaps between vehicles and helps you brake in stop-and-go traffic. The
Altima will alert you if you’re drifting, about to collide or driving without
hands on the steering wheel.
Safety Shield 360
Safety
Shield 360 is an upgrade to Nissan’s previous Nissan Safety Shield
suite. The Altima will offer Rear Automatic Braking for safer reversing as well
as:
- Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Warning
- Blind Spot Warning
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- High Beam Assist
Design
The 2019 Altima is surprisingly sleek for a sedan and offers
customization options for everyone to personalize their ride.
Exterior
The appearance of the Altima has been tweaked, giving it a
lower, more aerodynamic profile. The floating roof design and steep V-shaped
grille with chrome accents also add a nice touch.
Drivers have a large palette of exterior colors to choose
from as well. Options include:
- Scarlet Ember Tintcoat
- Sunset Drift Chromaflair®
- Deep Blue Pearl
- Storm Blue Chromaflair®
- Super Black
- Gun Metallic
- Brilliant Silver Metallic
- Pearl White Tricoat
- Glacier White
Interior
While the exterior is designed to make a great first
impression, the interior is all about comfort and style. Sink into the
ultra-padded Zero
Gravity Seats for extra lumbar support on long commutes – they work great
whether the seats are cloth or leather. For extra comfort, upgrade to a higher
trim for heated seats and steering wheel.
Like the exterior, there are several interior color choices,
including:
- Charcoal (with orange accents)
- Light Gray
- Sport
