6 Best Scenic Drives
in Tennessee
Summer doesn’t have a monopoly on the road trip market. In
fact, fall’s cooler temperatures arguably make it the perfect season to hit the
road. Load up the family and explore Tennessee’s rolling hills,
steep mountains
and natural wonders on these gorgeous scenic drives.
#1 Great Smoky
Mountains National Park
While the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is full of
fun, gorgeous drives, the Newfound
Gap Road tour is widely regarded as the best. This tour is beloved for its quick
highway pace and plethora of scenic overlooks.
Along the 31.6-mile road, travelers can view a surprising
variety of forest ecosystems. If you plan to explore the pull-off areas, be
sure to pack a light jacket as temperatures can be 10 degrees cooler than the
rest of the park.
#2 The Cherohala
Skyway
The Cherohala Skyway
is a breathtaking stretch of roadway that traverses more than 40 miles of the
Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in
North Carolina. This national scenic byway opened in 1996 with a construction
price tag of over $100 million.
Elevations range from 900 feet above sea level at the
Tellico River to over 5,400 feet at Haw Knob on the Tennessee-North Carolina
border. Drivers enjoy spectacular views of mountains, waterfalls and never-ending
forests. The view from the highest point – Santeetlah Overlook – is sure to
leave you speechless.
#3 The Snake
Another stunning drive through the Cherokee National Forest
is the 33 miles of Highway 421 known to driving enthusiasts and motorcyclists
as “The Snake.” The twists and turns of the road are nestled between three
mountains and a valley stretching from Mountain City to Bristol and make for a
truly stunning experience.
In addition to some of the most awe-inspiringly beautiful
natural scenery in the country, the highway offers visitors a thrilling
experience with nearly 500 curves to weave through. Take your time to soak up the
views and stop for lunch at the Shady Valley Country Store, admired for its
charming souvenirs and delicious country cooking.
#4 Tail of the Dragon
This scenic drive begins about 90 miles from Asheville,
North Carolina and is arguably the most famous motorcycle drive east of the
Mississippi. The Tail of the Dragon, also known as U.S. Highway 129, is
comprised of 318 curves packed into just 11 miles. Its many hairpin turns are
considered a rite of passage among bikers.
The Tail of the Dragon winds through soaring mountains,
whips around sharp turns and curls through steep drop-offs with gorgeous views
the whole way through. Drivers should approach the highway with caution,
however, as oncoming traffic demands a high level of vigilance.
#5 Great River Road
The Great River Road is a perfect drive for the entire
family. Full of historic beauty and recreational activities, it’s one of the
most popular scenic byways in the country.
Rhythm and blues music began along this stretch of road – hence
its nickname as the “Blues Highway.” Muddy Waters, B.B. King and Elvis Presley
all traversed this route and were inspired by the natural beauty of the Mississippi
Valley.
#6 Tennessee River
Gorge: Chattanooga Loop
If your family wants a relaxing drive, look no further than
the Tennessee River Gorge. The Chattanooga Loop portion stretches 126 miles and
is stunning year-round.
Families can stop at any point along the road to find
breathtaking views, historic buildings and hiking, biking and fishing
opportunities.
