2019 Acura RDX Earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

Acura is a car manufacturer known for taking safety seriously. As the first luxury brand awarded top safety ratings across its entire model line, Acura is committed to designing its vehicles to be as safe as possible without compromising performance or design.

The 2019 Acura RDX is the latest model to be awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+. Here is a closer look at why the midsize SUV earned this prestigious award.

Crashworthiness

The 2019 RDX received the top rating of “good” across all crashworthiness tests. The vehicle’s frame design means drivers and passengers will be protected in head-on and broadside collisions, while the head restraints and seats help prevent neck injuries in rear-end crashes.

The RDX is also considered to be safe in rollovers. The IIHS says it tested its roof strength by applying over 21,000 pounds of force – more than five times the vehicle’s weight – before it crushed five inches.

While the RDX has received top scores in most categories since its debut in 2007, this is the first model year that it scored “good” across the board, making the 2019 RDX the safest yet.

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation

The RDX comes fully equipped with the AcuraWatch suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance features, which includes:
  • ·         Blind Spot Information (BSI) System – Monitors sides and rear of the vehicle to alert you to the presence of a vehicle in your blind spots.
  • ·         Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) – Alerts you to obstacles detected ahead of your vehicle and can brake for you.
  • ·         Forward Collision Warning (FCW) System – Warns you with visual and audio alerts if it determines a frontal collision is possible.
  • ·         Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) – Designed to help you keep the vehicle centered in a detected lane by applying progressive steering inputs.
  • ·         Multi-View Rear Camera – Three angles allow you to see what’s behind and around you when backing out of a parking space or driveway.

The 2019 RDX earned a “superior” rating in front crash prevention – the highest score ever for this model.

Other Safety Features

The RDX was redesigned for 2019, and the upgrades made to the vehicle’s structure make it safer than ever. It features the latest generation of Acura’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, new high-strength steel door stiffener rings, and for the first time, eight airbags, including new driver and front-passenger knee airbags.

Acura’s iconic headlight design helped the 2019 RDX improve its safety score over the 2018 model. The Jewel Eye® LED headlights shine brighter than ever, thanks to seven LED lamps per headlight. The improved lights don’t just help you see better – they also look stunning juxtaposed with the RDX’s diamond pentagon grille.

The RDX’s Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system earned the top score of “good+” for its ease of use, ensuring that even the youngest passengers will be protected in a crash.

How Subaru Driver Assist Technology Keeps You Safer

Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology: How Subarus Can Keep You Safer On The Road Subaru has long been a leader in car safety systems, particularly those that allow the driver and passengers to be safer in a collision. Today most car buyers take crumple zones, safety belts, airbags and anti-lock brakes for granted, but overall safety features of a car are still a priority for most people. However, the focus is now shifting from what happens during and after an accident to preventing accidents from happening in the first place. According to a Consumer Reports article, in a national survey of U.S. drivers that plan to buy a new or used vehicle in the next two years, 51% said it was very important for their next car to have a rearview camera or backup warning , and 45% said they wanted a blind-spot warning system . It’s clear that these types of preventative safety measures are an important factor in new car purchases. Subaru’s latest driver safety systems go well bey...
