Five Road Trip Destinations Near Louisville

If you are a Louisville resident, you know there is a lot to love about the area. But even long-time locals need to get away every now and then. The good news is, you do not have to go far to find some new and exciting experiences. There are a handful of destinations just a short drive away. These are five of our favorite road trip destinations near Louisville.

Lexington, KY

Lexington, the “Horse Capital of the World,” is about 80 miles or an hour and 20 minutes from Louisville via Interstate 64, making it an ideal day trip destination.

If there is a bourbon buff in the group, do not miss the Wild Turkey, Four Roses and Woodford Reserve distilleries near Bardstown on your way into Lexington. They are part of the KentuckyBourbon Trail, home to some of the country’s best bourbon distilleries.

Keeneland race track is another Lexington must-visit, especially for thoroughbred race fans. The Keeneland Fall Meet will be held in October, but tours and other events are hosted year-round.

Nashville, TN

You may need more than a day to get the most out of a Music City road trip. The Tennessee capital is renowned for its country music roots, past and present. Downtown Nashville is home to the Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame and Ryman Auditorium – all worth a visit for any music fan.

The Nashville food scene has gained quite a bit of buzz in recent years as well, evidenced by the number of food festivalsand events taking place year-round. In the coming weeks, the Nashville Whiskey Festival, Oktoberfest and Taste of Nashville festivals will satisfy palates of residents and visitors alike.

French Lick, IN

Just a quick, 60-mile drive from Louisville, French Lick offers big-time fun in a small-town package – the population was less than 2,000 as of 2010! Louisville residents have been frequenting the Indiana township for many years due to its proximity to Patoka Lake – a sizable recreation area offering rental cabins, hiking trails, a swimming beach, boating and much more.

In town, the recently-restored French Lick Resort is a must-visit. The resort and casino features gaming, golf courses, stables, spas and plenty of other events and activities to keep you entertained.

Cave City, KY

Cave City is a lesser-known destination outside Louisville, yet it packs more than enough sights and outdoor adventure opportunities to make the 90-minute drive worth it. One of the main draws is Mammoth Cave National Park, home to one of the world’s longest natural cave systems.

Visitors can explore the depths of the caves via ranger-led tours, enjoy the park’s biking and hiking trails or canoe and kayak on the Green and Nolin Rivers.

If you are making a weekend out of your road trip, consider staying at Wigwam Village Inn #2 – one of only three remaining wigwam village hotels in the U.S. The unique lodging option mimics the look and feel of a Native American-style teepee community.

St. Louis, MO

St. Louis offers tons of big-city fun less than four hours from Louisville. The St. Louis Cardinals, 11-time World Series champions and perennial playoff contenders, are one of the city’s main draws. The Cardinals play home games in the summer and early fall at Busch Stadium.

Speaking of Busch, the Anheuser-Busch Brewery is a favorite destination among St. Louis day-trippers. Take a tour of the famed brewery and be sure to stop by the German-style beer garden afterward. Other downtown attractions include the St. Louis Zoo and of course, the Gateway Arch.

For a less tourist-y experience, the CentralWest End is great place to spend an afternoon in St. Louis. The neighborhood is home to galleries, cafes, pubs, antique shops and restaurants – great for experiencing the true vibe of the city.
