In 1999, the Honda Insight became the first hybrid car available to the American public. Although it received a lukewarm reception, it laid the foundation for the hybrid car market, including the ever-popular Toyota Prius.
Now that the 2010s are coming to a close, Honda has positioned themselves to dominate the hybrid market once again with the reimagined third-generation Insight. With its lower price point, stylish design and comparable fuel efficiency, the new 2019 Honda Insight is sure to give the Toyota Prius a run for its money.
Affordability
Whether you’re a fan of hybrid technology or simply want to save more at the pump, the new Insight delivers. The lowest trim is available at an MSRP of just $22,830, making it more than $600 less than the cheapest 2018 Prius and quite affordable as far as hybrids go.
For a little more money, you can get the EX for $24,060 or the Touring for $28,090. Each step up in trim level gets you a more comfortable and stylish interior and better technology options, making the upgrades well worth it.
Fuel Efficiency
The fuel efficiency of the new Insight is phenomenal no matter how you slice it:City | Highway | Combined | |
---|---|---|---|
LX | 55 mpg | 49 mpg | 52 mpg |
EX | 55 mpg | 49 mpg | 52 mpg |
Touring | 51 mpg | 45 mpg | 48 mpg |
By contrast, the base 2018 Prius gets 54/50/52 mpg for city/highway/combined driving. The difference in fuel efficiency is negligible, meaning the Insight is a better deal overall at the lower price point.
Sharp Exterior
Since the most recent redesign, the Prius has a reputation for being a bit of an eyesore – so much so that people have blamed the angular style in part for Toyota’s tanking Prius sales numbers.
The Prius isn’t alone in this. Hybrids tend to get a bad rap for looking like spaceships or children’s toys. In the past, car designers tried to make them look more futuristic and quirky to reflect the progressive technology inside. These days, though, hybrid technology is becoming more standard, and people want more traditional exteriors.
If you’re not into the old hybrid aesthetic, you will love the new 2019 Honda Insight. Unlike the Prius, it looks like a typical sedan, taking a few notes from the popular Civic and Accord.
Lavish Interior
Despite its low price point, the 2019 Insight is downright luxurious. Its comfortable interior is what makes it stand out the most from the Prius, and even from other cars in Honda’s 2019 lineup.
At each trim level, you have three seat color choices:
- Black
- Ivory
- Two-toned black/mocha
Impressive Technology
The Honda Insight has all the technological features car owners have come to expect over the past decade. While the different trims offer different levels of technological power, all three have a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, Push Button Start and Honda Sensing® safety features, including:- Forward Collision Warning
- Lane Departure Warning
